She’s A Peach: Philly Gets A Taste Of Sweet San Fran Entertainment

If April showers bring May flowers, then Peaches Christ’s first visit to Philadelphia may bring more East Coast productions from the San Francisco drag legend.

Friend of the website Pissi Myles is bringing the Queen of Cult Movies, Peaches Christ, to her April installment of her monthly show, What Makes Me Pissi. Other guests for the April 9 show at L’Etage in Philly will include Astala Vista and Iris Spectre. Tickets are running $20 for general admission and $30 for meet and greet. Doors open at 7 p.m. with a 8 p.m. showtime.

imageFor those who are not aware who Peaches Christ is (which if you are a fan of drag, you really should be), this multitalented queen has hosted Midnight Masses on the West Coast for nearly 20 years for audiences to appreciate cult films and the icons that have spawned from them. A number of such icons, including John Waters and Cassandra Peterson (aka Elvira), have participated in Mass with Peaches, leading to lasting friendships. For Peaches, it is a very surreal thing to say she has worked closely with her favorite cult film icons.

“I’m still very much a fan — I still get giddy when I’m around them,” she said. “I am so shocked this is my life.”

Now, after being in the business for a number of years, Peaches experiences fans, both young and old, treating her much like she felt about her icons growing up.

“I’m so flattered every time it happens, but I can’t find myself to believe that it’s true,” she said. “It’s emotional, too. I have a blanket a fan made me with pictures of Peaches and of Peaches and her. And she’s 17 years old!”

Though most of her guest wish list came to fruition, Peaches still has a few icons that she’d love bring in for Midnight Mass — one of these being Elizabeth Berkley who played Nomi in “Showgirls.” One of her favorite films, Peaches feels Berkley needs to experience the love people have for “Showgirls.” She has shown the film now 19 years and hopes to one day bring Berkley in for one of the annual showings.

Graduating with a degree in film from Penn State University, Peaches’ appreciation for film goes beyond just hosting showings of her favorite cult movies. She directed her first feature horror film, “All About Evil,” in 2010 with an all cast including Natasha Lyonne, Cassandra Peterson and Mink Stole.

The film was an immediate cult hit both in the United States and internationally. You can catch “All About Evil” now on Chiller, a TV channel that specializes in showing horror and thriller programs.

“We get people tweeting costumes all the time,” Peaches said. “I’ve seen the film distributed more internationally, like Germany and Japan, while it’s more of a niché here in the United States.”

The vast success of “All About Evil” came as a surprise to Peaches, but it now provides her the challenge of creating a follow-up that keeps the momentum going.

“Right now I’m working on three scripts,” she said. “Being a writer, it’s hard for me to buckle down and choose one script to run with.”

Aside from being a film expert and director, Peaches keeps busy producing live drag parodies of iconic films.

imageWillam, Latrice Royale and Peaches just finished a successful run of “Mister Act,” a parody of the Whoopi Goldberg classic “Sister Act.” Peaches said the show was super satisfying and had multiple requests to tour. Due to all three performers’ extremely busy schedules, however, they won’t be able to begin potentially touring with “Mister Act” until next year.

Other hit drag parodies by Peaches include “Coven: Return of the Manderson Sisters” (“Hocus Pocus”), “Return to Grey Gardens” (“Grey Gardens”) and “Wizard of Odd” (“Wizard of Oz”).

Pissi met Peaches last October during the Real Q LGBT Festival in Pittsburgh when Peaches was touring with showings of “All About Evil.” Pissi’s partner, photographer David Ayllon, did some artwork and shoots for Peaches in the past, which led to the three meeting in person for the first time. Rather than attend an after party, the three decided to get food at Primanti Bros., giving a chance for the three to bond more. Because of this, an instant friendship was born.

Since Peaches’ family is from Maryland, she makes trips to the East Coast when she can for shows and visits the family. Peaches will be performing in New York this weekend with fellow drag legends Coco Peru and Chad Michaels in her production of “Witches of East Village,” a drag spoof of the classic “Witches of Eastwick.” (See end of article for more information)

The pair took the opportunity while she’s on the East Coast to link up for Pissi’s monthly show at L’Etage in Philly.

Oddly enough, this is the first time Peaches will perform in the City of Brotherly Love. The challenge for Peaches now is to downscale her usual huge theatrical productions into a more intimate setting to introduce herself to the Philly audience.

“‘All About Evil’ was received really well in Philly, so it’s actually strange that I’ve never performed there,” Peaches said.

Pissi said the pair will do her usual Q&A segment “Ask Pissi,” spitfire questions and meet and greet together. Pissi may perform a new parody for the show as a special treat for the show.

If all goes well, the pair’s show will open up the opportunity for Peaches to produce some of her bigger theatre shows on the East Coast.

“Pissi is a young, talented force to be reckoned with,” she said. “Older queens love to see sparks in young performers, and Pissi definitely has that spark in her.”

You can catch Peaches Christ prior to her Philly debut in New York on Saturday for two showings of her production “The Witches of East Village,” featuring fellow drag legend Coco Peru and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Star winner Chad Michaels.

Once Peaches returns to San Fran, she will put the final touches to her newest production “Spice Racks.” The show will feature Peaches, “Drag Race” season seven favorite Katya Zamolodchikova, season five contestant Honey Mahogany,  and UK’s Anna Phylactic and Cheddar Gorgeous. Taking place in the Castro Theatre, the 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows on April 16 will feature the drag parody prior to a showing of “Spice World.”

Pissi Myles will continue to have her weekly Drag Race viewing parties on Mondays at Paradise nightclub in Asbury Park, NJ. She will also host her monthly amateur drag night on April 24 at Albatross in New York.
